Hello, thanks for listening to me at today’s public comment meeting and for Claire Levy giving me a couple minutes after the meeting was adjourned to talk in person.
I wanted to share this section regarding the use of the full lane as it applies to Colorado bike law. I was told bikes may use the full lane unless it is posted otherwise well this is true as you can see below this is applied by the bicyclist individually in certain situations and is not a directive where the county allows the full use lane at all times for permanent use that overrides this personal choice.
I was also told that Lee Hill Drive was unique in regards to bike use so the Bikes may use full lane sign was not added to any of the roads such as sunshine Canyon or Flagstaff. I think any reason reasonable person can disagree with this assessment since the amount of bike and vehicle traffic on both these roads would prove otherwise. The only difference is they do not have a resident living on that road such as myself that has brought constant awareness and created a website to call attention to this serious situation.
I understand the budget constraints and limitations to add a full bike lane to Lee Hill Drive or any other road but I also see millions being spent acknowledging and expanding for bike safety on Highway 119 which I agree with. The same level of concern for the safety of bikes and vehicles when they come together, should also be equally applied to all roads in the county.
Here is a snippet from the website for reference and a link:
Ride in the right third of the lane serving your direction of travel when it feels safe. Use the full lane at any time to avoid obstacles, to be more visible, to prepare for a left turn or to discourage drivers from passing when it is not safe. You may also leave the right side of the lane if you are overtaking a slower-moving vehicle or riding on a one-way road.
